Mönchengladbach

Activities in the city

Those who have already secured tickets for the upcoming EuroHockey Championships 2023 from 18 to 27 August in Mönchengladbach and are interested in the city and its opportunities in addition to the hockey spectacle have plenty of other ways to pass the time.

Even the many seat names that the large city on the Lower Rhine bears, such as "Vitus City" or the former Rhineland "Manchester", show how diverse the city is as well.
To pass the time besides the European Hockey Championship in Mönchengladbach, the city and the surrounding area offer numerous opportunities to have fun with the whole family.
From various swimming pools to a zoo, city tours and art & culture to the "Stars of the Galaxy" film museum, there is plenty to do.

Art & Culture

If you are interested in art and culture in Mönchengladbach, you can visit art exhibitions, museums and the old town. Here you can discover the city wonderfully with guided tours or on your own.

Starting with the Vinyl Garage, where music fans and vinyl lovers can find a record shop for second-hand vinyl and selected new goods in a lovingly furnished garage. In the middle of the old town, the cosy shop creates space to browse, listen and exchange music. Afterwards, it's wonderful to eat, drink and dance in the old town with its colourfully designed house facades and quaint lampshades. The old town is much more than a party mile.

Recreational sport

If the family wants to do some sporting activities themselves after watching the European Field Hockey Championships, there are various options for that too. One of them is the mini-golf course in the Bunter Garten. Located on the edge of the inner-city recreation area "Bunter Garten", you will find a family atmosphere. The mini-golf course offers fun not only for families, but also for recreational athletes and professionals. In addition, the "Bunter Garten" is one of the most popular city parks in Mönchengladbach. In particular, the annually planted flower parterre blooms in many bright colours in spring, but also in summer. This attraction is located near the stadium and can be reached by car in just under 10 minutes.

Several swimming and leisure pools such as the Volksbad in Mönchengladbach, the Vitusbad or the Schlossbad Niederrhein provide cooling on hot days. The Volksbad Niederrhein is a purely outdoor pool. In addition to a 50-metre sports pool and many different playing fields for beach volleyball, football or even basketball, a 1-metre board and a 3-metre diving tower provide lots of fun, especially for children. The 30,000-square-metre lawn invites you to relax and sunbathe.

In the Vitusbad you will find several attractions, including a 50-metre pool, which is a fun pool for some and a sports pool for others. Also in the building of the Vitusbad is the "Actic" fitness studio, here it is possible to get fit on 1,200 square metres.  The attraction of the Schlossbad Niederrhein is an 80-metre-long white-water canal (it is important to note here that use is only permitted for children over the age of 10). The Vitusbad and the Schlossbad Niederrhein share another special feature, namely the opportunity to go VR snorkelling on selected days.

“Stars of the Galaxy”-Filmmuseum

Since 2011, there has been a permanent exhibition in Mönchengladbach that inspires science fiction fans all over Germany. The "Stars of the Galaxy" film museum offers 1000 square metres of exhibits from many different galaxies. The exhibition's "Hall of Fame" in particular is exceptional, as it features over 100 original film costumes, among other things. This attraction is also within easy reach and the drive time is only 15 minutes.
